A conversation thread

A blog commentator named Ashanthi, who first turned up in nittewa, has the habit of carrying out unrelated conversations across multiple blog entries. So I opened this thread for the conversation here.

Ashanthi - this thread is for carrying out the conversation in one place rather than all over the place in every blog entry.

Yeah Melbourne is cool - but Sydney is the best

Each to their own, I say. Actually spent a couple of years there and didn't like it. Good if you like the harbour and corporate culture but Melbourne offers something different.

I take it you are not involved in any "peace" efforts in Australia?

No, just an armchair pundit. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people involved in the peace efforts.

Do you mix with any Tamil people & engage in such robust discussions with them?

I know a few extended family friends. They were affected by 83 in and around Colombo but they are not interested into the whole eelam struggle.

Also met a few younger Tamil guys (20-30) through professional activity. Each of them had been directly affected by the violence in the north. I gather they are somewhat supportive of the political struggle for equality. However do not have any love (an understatement from some of their comments) for the LTTE.

No luck with the rugby. Oh well.

Ah - of course the ole Syd vs Melb rivalry. All depends I suppose on where you lived in Sydney? The harbour is a stunner & coporate culture not the only one available...

    Peace ...
Oh - don't underestimate yourself...I'm sure a llifetime of being Sri Lankan qualifies us all to have some input into what could essentially change our lives forever.

Re Tamil friends - a lot of Tamil people say that to Sinhalese people, it's a lot easier to do so believe me.
Or in fact you just don't talk about it to your Sinhalese friends - hence it appears that one is not interested. Have known some Sinhalese friends for decades & to this day we don't cross that line.

Besides most people affected by '83 were from Colombo - they are definitely not interested in Tamil Eelam - they were never interested in Jaffna in the first place :-)

As for the young Tamil guys - yes indeed one wonders how on Earth the LTTE survives (no I'm not being sarcastic) given all the bad press they are getting from even their own. I guess time will tell...

hey there IVAP - how's the cricket going.

You seem to have a great insight into things - you are right of course about trust - but theres the funny thing we are Sri Lankan & out there in the big bad world we stick together like glue - but back home seems like things are very. very different.

My kind? You mean all those other pesky humans. Bugger them.

Really though, I don't care about anyone's ethnic identity (including yours....no insult intended in that). Never have, never will. Diversity in humanity and all that.

Hey lay off Melbourne. it's the worlds greatest city and it would be pretty boring if there weren't any nutbags around.

Contained? You? No way, feel free to say anything you like. No restriction on speech here other than for Spam.

Off to watch them loose the cricket to the poms. Grrrr....

blast the cricket - so annoying ... anyway - let them win for 18 years and then they can be proud...

One of the things that you said you were going to do is tell us why the Peace Blog was not going to work - when are you going to post this ???

Oh & by the way - you didn't answer my question - do you know any Indo Aryans in Melbourne?

Confused or Disoc Bobed?? Or just plain hyped???

  • At 8:55 pm AEST, Blogger ivap said…

Didn't realise that a question was asked. I know plenty of Indo Aryans but I don't know this particular nutter.

I'll be posting it when I have some time to put together something coherent. A good blog takes me an hour or two usually.

Looking at the wikipedia definition of Indo Aryans it's a linguistic grouping.

The Indo-Aryans are the speakers of the Indo-Aryan languages, and thereby a subset of the Indo-Iranians. The earliest records of Indo-Aryans are in the Rigveda, and in references to the Mitanni rulers. The Indo-Aryans inhabiting northern India, the bearers of the Vedic civilization are sometimes called Vedic Aryans. The term derives from the Sanskrit word "Arya".

Potentialy the whole of south-asia speaks on or another Indo-Aryan dialect.

ashanthi - I've been away from the blog to answer your questions. Anyway here goes

...is this just some political bullshit or do these guys dislike each other

As far as I can gather it's all just political BS. The two of them seem to be effing with each other online.

AFAIK, Indi is right-of-center and Morq is left-of-center and have a go at each other. IMO, Morq does punch below the belt with some of the personal attacks but I don't see any malice there.

Indi certainly isn't racist, he is a reasonable guy. It's all those other anon limpdicks who can't put together a coherent sentence that seem to appropriate indi's comments towards their own ends.

    ...it's a pretty miserable day.

Hey cheer up. I know it's easier said than done but ...

Worse still I have to cook dinner for my monster-in-law mother tomorrow night. Have you got any idea of another Sri Lankan desert apart from Wattlapam

    hehehe.....well sh!+ happens..;)

This may be too late. Off the top of my head I can think of Bread Pudding , Fruit Salad or Milk Toffy. Let me know if you still want the recipes. I suggest a dash to the nearest Cheese Cake Shop.
